How do we initiate digital transformation in education?

The Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport teamed up with The Idea Consultancy and STEP IT Academy to increase the quality and access of online learning during the COVID 19 outbreaks.

This was one of the few projects which required short vetting, basic strategic thinking but a whole lot of elbow grease.

Our challenge was to turn around Cambodia’s first e-learning conference in a 90 day period to quickly arm Cambodian schools, educators, parents and students with best practices and solutions to deal with the sudden lockdowns and access to traditional education.

Here’s how 5 steps we took to keep it tight and on budget:

  1. We 10 MILE’d it. This meant only doing the most impactful actions with as little effort and expenditure as possible. This also meant a lot more planning and discussing upfront but less investment in execution, in other words, measuring twice and cutting once.

  2. Instead of a $10k conferencing software, used hopin.to on a $99 per 100 participant budget and live-streamed the rest. This kept our total venue budget under $700. We immediately invested 3 team members to get familiar with the platform and started ideating on how we could monetize: Exhibitor Booths, VIP Tickets and Ad Spots.

  3. We used our network-marketing process (no not pyramid scheming) to get past Facebook’s algorithms to reach over two million people and engage 250,000 with a less than $500 in ad buying. That’s total ad buy for an education conference and not something traditionally fun like Comic-con.

  4. As event organizers, we know that we’re not the subject matter, the experts are. We used the MOEYS’ (Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport) credibility and really pushed the agenda that the keynote speaker was the highly respected Minister Dr. Hang Choun Naron to rope in Microsoft and other speakers (and therefore sponsors).

  5. Content Creation Sprinting. We put together a Principal, 2 Khmer copywriters and 2 designers to survey nearly 500 parents, students and teachers to craft nearly 100 items of targeted, bi-lingual content in 5 days to be disseminated and essentially copy-and-pasted (with captions) for our partners, sponsors and speakers to reach as many people as possible.
