How tedious and dirty work is nurturing the next generation of exceptional Cambodian leaders.

 

Volunteer Nation is a group of 2,500 youth volunteers from Cambodia who dedicate their time, expertise and spirit to supporting the community on large scale endeavours from environmental advocacy to painting disenfranchised schools.

Volunteer Nation started from one Facebook post looking for 60 volunteers for a food festival but ended up attracting over 1,200 youth volunteers! Due to the surge in supply of manpower, The Idea was able to conduct waste management research across 12,000 festival goers over an 8 hour period, studying their food and plastic waste behaviour which helped inform policy-makers on plastic waste.

 
 

Since then, The Idea has grown the programme to fulfil 4 core functions:

  1. Identify, vet and support meaningful community building opportunities 

  2. Provide training, coaching and mentorship for volunteers to be exceptional members of society

  3. Offer scholarships to exceptional volunteer leaders

  4. Advocate for volunteering by encouraging dialogue and showcasing the spirit of civic duty for everyone in Cambodia, to create a harmonious and peaceful community in the places we live and are committed to.

Volunteer Nation’s success is attributed to it’s values-driven approach:

  • Over 100 upskilling workshops hosted for over 1,000 youth volunteers in the areas of:

    • Data Collection - Field Work

    • Single-Use-Plastic

    • Communication Skills and Professionalism

 

  • Over 50 community events supported from 200 grass-roots sustainability focused events to major 50,000 Government-led initiatives

    • Clean Energy Week

    • Slaprea, Cambodia’s Biggest Food Festival and Waste Management Social experiment

    • Baitong Festival

    • River Festival

    • Angkor Sangkran

    • MSME Video Competitions

    • Concerts, Sporting Competitions and much, much more

    • Over 2,500 volunteers

    • 3 full scholarships awarded
